Puerto del Sol

Kilometer Zero

The central point from which all of the highways in Madrid are measured

Clock Tower
Puerto del Sol

The tradition is...
On New Year's Eve, when the clock strikes midnight,
to eat a grape at each gong of the bell to ensure good luck for the rest of the year

The process is

  1. Pop a grape in your mouth
  2. Chew, chew, swallow
  3. Repeat 11 times
  4. Take a long swig of cava
  5. Resume normal breathing

The Plaza Mayor

Filled with vendors selling wigs and hats to wear around town
and moss and bark for building nativity scenes...
I've never seen so many nativity scenes, or "belens" as they are called in Spanish
even live ones!
